Understanding Therapeutic Interventions
IFS
Internal Family Systems views the mind as made up of different "parts" each with its own feelings, thoughts, and roles (e.g. protector, inner critic, vulnerable child). The goal is to build understanding and compassion within these parts to improve self trust by integrating all "parts" of the self. Like a healed family that has resolved conflict in order to work together with common values to achieve a goal.
ACT
Acceptance Commitment Therapy has the goal of enhancing psychological flexibility by teaching you to work with, not change or get rid of, distressing thoughts and emotions. Individuals are taught mindfulness skills to stay in the present moment, diffusion (to recognize one is not their thoughts and feelings but that thoughts and feelings are information); and identifying core values to move towards living a more intentional life despite experiencing distressing thoughts and emotions.
